One of the most effective interventions I use is Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing, (EMDR). EMDR training came to Oklahoma in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City bombing, on April 19, 1995. This tragedy resulted in widespread trauma and grief for survivors, rescue workers, friends and family members of those directly impacted by the event. In addition, it triggered old, unresolved traumas for many individuals in the state.
A team of volunteer EMDR therapists immediately flew into Oklahoma City and worked tirelessly for several months providing this therapy in conjunction with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services.
Before they concluded their work, they trained about 300 of us, all licensed therapists, to carry on their work. EMDR therapy incorporates cognitive-behavioral therapy and has been enormously successful with my clients. As a result, I became certified in EMDR and have been able to help many individuals, over the past 25 years, more effectively cope with and resolve a variety of issues and problems.
